A mission statement or vision is at the core of a company’s brand and operations. Everything you do should be guided by the mission and vision. As a Product Manager, you don’t do anything without consulting the mission and vision first. It’s like a business bible. When people break out epic-soundin’ terms like “north star” vision you know it’s the shiz. What Is A North Star Vision For?
A tech company’s North star vision and mission describe why the company exists. It will tell the customer the company’s passion and why the business exists at all. If product teams are lost the north star will guide the way. For example, take Uber. Its mission is to “Reimagine the way the world moves for the better”. Every product that is created should serve that vision.
Why the company exists – the mission and vision describe the purpose and why the founders made the company.
What the company creates – this can describe the service or product that the company builds.
Who is the company building for – the mission describes who will benefit from the company and its products and services.
